What is KL travel insurance?

KL Insurance (that is, medical expenses) is a form of financial protection for people living outside their country of origin. The policy covers, among other things:

  • medical expenses in the event of a sudden illness or accident,
  • hospital stay,
  • doctor's appointments,
  • purchase of necessary medications,
  • medical transport (including to the country of origin, if necessary).

This means you don't have to worry about high bills—which, in the event of hospitalization, can run as high as several thousand zlotys.

Is KL insurance mandatory?

Yes—in many situations Health Insurance for Foreigners is required in Poland. This applies primarily to:

  • people from outside the European Union applying for Schengen visa – must provide proof of valid insurance coverage for the duration of their stay,
  • foreign nationals applying for residence card,
  • tourists staying for more than 90 days,
  • participants in group tours or business trips,
  • students coming for a short educational program or language course.

The policy must cover the entire duration of the stay and have a minimum coverage amount at least 30,000 euros – This is a prerequisite for the document to be accepted by the Polish authorities.

Why is it a good idea to have KL insurance even if it isn't required?

Although some people (e.g., those from the EU) are not formally required to have private health insurance, it is worth considering:

  • The National Health Fund does not always cover the full costs medical care for foreign nationals—especially if they are not insured in their country of origin,
  • Private medical care in Poland is expensive—a single visit can cost as much as 300 zł,
  • Emergency care (e.g., ambulance service) may not be covered without insurance.

A good insurance policy covers not only medical treatment, but also:

  • medical transport to the country,
  • translator's assistance,
  • 24/7 helpline in your language.

How much does travel insurance cost for foreigners?

The price depends on age, country of origin, length of stay, and the amount of coverage. For example:

  • 7-day stay – from 50 zł,
  • 30 days – from 80 to 150 zł,
  • 90 days or more – from 200 to 600 PLN.

This is a small expense compared to the potential medical costs, which in the event of a serious accident can reach as high as several tens of thousands of zlotys.
