When does travel insurance take effect?
Travel insurance takes effect on the date specified when the policy is purchased. From that moment on, a foreign national is entitled to medical assistance in the event of:
- sudden illness,
- in the event of an accident,
- injury,
- poisoning,
- a sudden deterioration in health.
The policy is valid 24 hours a day within Poland or throughout the Schengen Area—depending on the plan you choose.
What does travel health insurance cover?
In accordance with Schengen requirements, the insurance policy must cover:
Medical expenses
Including:
- doctor's appointments,
- medications prescribed by a doctor,
- diagnostic tests (X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans),
- medical procedures necessary in the event of a sudden illness.
Hospitalization Costs
In the event of an accident or a serious illness, the policy covers hospitalization, life-saving surgeries, and emergency medical procedures.
Medical Transport
Including:
- transport to the hospital by ambulance,
- medical transport between facilities,
- return transportation to the home country if their health prevents them from continuing their stay.
Repatriation
Coverage of the costs of returning to the home country after treatment is completed, if a doctor determines that the foreign national is unable to travel on their own.
24/7 Assistance
The insurer arranges for assistance:
- shows the nearest location,
- schedules appointments,
- provides instructions on how to report an incident,
- provides language support.

How does using insurance work in practice?
1. A sudden incident occurs
A foreigner suddenly falls ill or is involved in an accident.
2. Contact the emergency call center
In most cases, you should call the insurer's emergency number. You should provide the following information:
- policy information,
- symptoms,
- place of residence.
3. Organization of Assistance
The insurer will direct the patient to the nearest clinic or send an ambulance. In many cases, the foreign national does not have to pay for the visit—payment is processed electronically.
4. Treatment or transportation
A foreign national receives medical care. If the situation is serious, the insurer covers hospitalization, medical procedures, or transportation.
5. Return to the home country if necessary
If treatment must continue in the country of residence, the policy covers medical transport or repatriation.
What isn't covered by travel insurance?
Travel insurance does NOT cover the following:
- regular treatment of chronic,
- routine examinations,
- planned procedures,
- follow-up visits that are not due to a sudden illness.
Therefore, it is not suitable for long-term stays or applications for a residence permit.
In such cases, a different policy is required—as described here: Health Insurance and the Residence Card – Key Formalities
Is travel insurance enough for every foreigner?
Yes—if the stay lasts no more than 90 days and is for tourism, family, or business purposes.
No—if a foreign national plans to stay longer than 3 months or is applying for a temporary residence permit.
