Why is travel insurance insufficient for longer stays?
Travel insurance is designed for short-term trips—usually up to 30, 60, or 90 days. Its main purpose is to provide protection against unexpected events, such as:
- sudden illness
- injury
- the need for medical intervention
- medical transport
- repatriation
Travel insurance does not cover long-term or preventive care, does not cover treatment for chronic conditions, and is not considered an acceptable form of insurance when applying for a residence permit.
Does travel insurance meet the requirements of the provincial office?
No. The office requires that a foreign national submitting an application for a residence permit have insurance coverage that includes:
- full medical costs in Poland
- hospitalization
- medical transport and repatriation
- protection for the entire anticipated duration of the stay
- documentation in Polish or English
Standard travel insurance does not meet the continuity requirement—it expires after 30–90 days, and renewing it is not considered a single, continuous policy. Additionally, many travel insurance policies cover only emergencies, which is insufficient for long-term stays.
The detailed requirements are described here: Health Insurance and the Residence Card – Key Formalities
What are the risks for a foreigner who only has travel insurance during a long-term stay?
Failure to have adequate insurance may result in:
- rejection of an application for a residence card
- a request to submit additional documents
- refusal to extend a stay
- high medical costs in the event of illness
- problems related to verifying the legality of residence
Therefore, a foreign national staying in Poland for more than 3 months must have insurance that meets the statutory requirements.
What type of insurance should you choose for a stay longer than 90 days?
The best solution is Health insurance for a residence card, which meets all of the agency's requirements:
- is valid for the entire duration of the stay specified in the application
- covers the costs of outpatient and inpatient treatment
- includes specialists, diagnostic services, medical procedures, and medical transportation
- is accepted by the Border Guard and provincial offices
These policies are designed for foreign nationals who:
- are working or plan to work
- are in school or college
- operate
- live in Poland with their family
- apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit
When can travel insurance be used?
Travel insurance remains valid when:
- the stay lasts less than 90 days
- A foreigner is visiting solely for tourism purposes
- The purpose of the visit does not include work or study
- No application for a residence card is being filed
In any other case, long-term insurance is necessary.
Why can't you rely on a travel insurance policy for a longer stay?
The agency acknowledges that a travel insurance policy:
- does not guarantee continuous protection
- has a limited range of services
- does not include treatment for chronic conditions
- does not provide a comprehensive diagnosis
- does not meet the formal criteria
Therefore, it cannot serve as a basis for legalizing one's stay.
